What is an Open-Ended Time Off Request?

Open-Ended Time Off allows employees to submit a time off request without selecting an end date. This is helpful in situations where the return date is unknown (for example, extended sick leave).

Enabling Open-Ended Time Off (Admins)

To allow this option for a time off type:

  1. Go to System Settings -> Time Management -> Time Off
  2. Select Time Off Types.
  3. Create a new type or edit an existing one.
  4. Select Days under Units of Time
  5. Under Request Restrictions:
    • Enable Allow Overbook.
    • Select Allow Open Time Off.

         6.    Save your changes.

Notes:

  • Available for day-based time off types only.
  • Not available if Balance Required is enabled.
  • If disabled later, existing open requests remain active, but new ones cannot be created.

Submitting an Open-Ended Request (Employees)

If enabled by your company, this is how you can submit an open-ended request:

  1. Navigate to Time Off.
  2. Click on + in the Requests tab.
  3. Select the applicable time off type.
  4. Choose a Start Date.
  5. Leave the End Date blank.
  6. Click Save.

The request will be submitted with an Open status.

Note:

  • The start date is required.
  • Only full-day requests are supported.
  • Only one Open-Ended Time Off request can be active per employee.

Managing an Open Request

While Open

  • Duration is calculated from the start date to the current date.
  • Time off balances update daily.
  • The request appears as ongoing in calendars and reports.

Ending the Request

When returning to work:

  1. Open the existing request.
  2. Click End Time Off.
  3. Select the return date.
  4. Save.

The system will automatically recalculate the total duration and update balances
